American Viola Society Festival Performance

The University of Georgia Viola Ensemble evolved from a collaboration between the UGA Viola Studio and Composition Department in Fall of 2018 when pieces were written for the viola studio including the work the ensemble is championing at the AVS festival by composer Kelly Catlin. Its current members are graduate students Nathan Groot, Elizabeth Boyce, Claudia Malchow, and Neelee Brauner. We’re told that guest composer Kelly Catlin is curled up with a bottle of Purell in self-quarantine, dreaming about the 2021 AVS Festival. Her piece, Presence for Four Violas, will be performed at the 2021 Festival. The inspiration behind this work is the warmth you feel in a quiet moment of deep connection. To learn more about the festival and performance, visit the American Viola Society Festival webpage.

Review for "Backstory"

While it’s not even close to a one-to-one comparison, I feel comfortable mentioning that this record—due to its arrangement, complexity and use of breath, the spoken word and select electronics—reminds me most strongly of Laurie Anderson, and that’s always welcome.

"Backstory" Review in Flagpole Magazine

Decidedly a departure from classical repertoire, Kelly Catlin’s Backstory is a contemporary electro-acoustic flute album with semi-cinematic songs that could beautifully soundtrack the imaginative pastoral settings of Studio Ghibli animations. By its very nature, the flute’s sound is weightless and spritely, lending itself to delicate cottagecore-reminiscent melodies...

Elizabeth Boyce, UGA DMA violist, is performing my work for viola and electronics tomorrow on her recital! I'm honored to have my work performed alongside works by Kevin Day, fellow UGA composer. She's using her performance and platform to raise funds for the Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement, which fights for social justice rights. If you want to hear some electroacoustic viola and contribute to the cause, tune in!

Badie Khaleghian, Composition Recital

All pieces in composer Badie Khaleghian’s recital are inspired by observing, exploring, and learning about my mental and emotional state through collaboration, conversation, and research.

The amazing Caroline Owen is coming back to perform Life Suite for piano, media, and dance. Duoctane is coming from Georgia State to perform Naturalization: the Dual Identity for alto sax and percussion. Sevda Arjomand and Kelly Catlin will premiere Naturalization: Longing for Homeland for flute, soprano, and electronics.

The last piece will be the premiere of my alto sax concerto entitled "Debilitator" written for Dan Phipps. This piece is a programmatic piece about loneliness in modern society and narrating an individual journey dealing with loneliness. Emily Eng will conduct and UGA performers will accompany Dan on sax.
